The “Learning to read to read the Bible” Literacy Program in the Lira Men’s and Women’s prisons is continuing through Lucy, our trusted manager. Also the phenomenal literacy ministry of Isaac Odongo has expanded to 4 classes. Isaac is severely physically disabled, born with cerebral palsy. He illustrated all of Hands Across Nations (HAN) literacy books, and became a teacher for the lepers, disabled and the poor in his home village. Below is an abbreviated version of a letter he wrote to us and to the “Friends of Hands Across Nations USA” awhile back. It should make all of our hearts SING to know how the Lord has used the funds our donors have sent to the Lango people in Uganda!

Re: I am a rejected person you lifted from the dust. You put an un-believable smile in my heart!!
“I would like to thank God first, secondly a big thank you with a lot of love! I would like to thank you for the following things that you have done it to me during my difficult situations.
- Being kind to me letting me sit inside your car then drive to many villages. (exposing me)
- Showing me the way to salvation
- Allowing me to be a teacher – an opportunity for the leper class
- Allowing me to be a part of the HAN staff
- Taking me for a trip to visit the source of the Nile, an unforgettable day to me
- Supporting me in my permanent building (HAN built him a brick home) – it really ashamed the devil and the opressors – you picked me from the dust and made me feel so special when I am sleeping in my new house. (he had been sleeping on the dirt floor of a workshop)
Oh, you care for the poor and needy: the lepers, lames, street beggars, HIV victims, teachers, and prisoners. Bless your generosity! Isaac Odongo
Isaac welcomed Rebecca, who had a brain surgery, and her brother, to live in his home so that she could have therapy and a good diet. She recovered to where she could talk, and even sing, walk with help and read. Unfortunately she was taken back to her village by her father and eventually passed away due to lack of care and feeding.
We are still in the USA due to follow-up for Carolyn’s medical issues. However it is looking positive for our return to Uganda in early May! Please continue to pray for Uganda and the continued work of Hands Across Nations.
